Budget conversations are already beginning in Montgomery County Public Schools. Continuing reductions in state and federal funding along with increasing costs have put significant pressure on the division to determine how to continue to provide quality education to all students while stretching every dollar in the budget to maintain programs and buildings. To receive updates whenever new items are posted to the budget update webpage, please email [email protected] and include "Budget" in the subject line.

In 2008, MCPS operated with a budget of $97 million. When adjusted for inflation this amount would be equivalent $104 million, $12 million less than the division currently has budgeted.

The operating budget for MCPS is $92 million for 2012-2013, $5 million less than what the division had in 2008. MCPS requested $96 million to maintain operations from the 2011-2012 school year, but only $92 million was allocated.  The budget gap caused the loss of 40 staff positions, elimination of the summer Governor's School, and an increase in walking distance for bus stops. In the coming year some of the reductions proposed but not enacted last year may be reconsidered including the pay-to-play initiative, the potential closing of one or more school buildings, and the elimination of additional positions throughout the division.

We anticipate that the school budget for next year may see an overall reduction of $200,000, but with estimated required additional costs well over $1 million for next year. Once again the school division will have to make difficult decisions that impact programs and services for students.

To prevent further reductions and associated consequences, concerned citizens can communicate with their local and state legislators.  State legislators control making education funding a priority in Virginia. Local legislators need to know that you support options to increase revenue to support quality education for Montgomery County.

How would a funding loss affect MCPS?

The division will be forced to make difficult choices, once again, if more educational funding is lost. A list of items considered and implemented for 2012-13 is available here.

How would increased funding affect MCPS?

  • Restore lost programs for students
  • Re-implement initiatives that had to be cut due to the budget
  • Restore funding for enrichment activities, including athletics and field trips
  • Restore funds for instructional materials and educational support equipment
  • Restore positions that have been eliminated through budget cuts, including teachers, counselors, and tutors
  • Improve instructional programs
  • Provide necessary 21st Century technology to support classrooms
  • Adjust employee compensation to competitive salary levels in the region
  • Prevent further reductions
